While watching the movie Shutter Island again last night I came across with a former R&B and Blues
star singer Dinah Washington. Her song "This bitter earth" is being used in some scenes throughout the movie and is completely played during the credits scene.
When I did some background search about her I found out that she died at the age of 39 by an overdosis of secobarbital and amobarbital.
What struck me is the fact that all the famous musicians of the past were singing about or even literally foreseeing their death in their lyrics.
One of the best examples for that could be the lyrics of 2Pac
"Only fear of death"
"If I die tonight"
"Death around the corner"
to only mention a few
However, 2 Pac was not a single case of a musician singing about his own death.
Amy Winehouse, who died on the 23rd of July 2011, was famous for her years of abusing drugs
and alcohol and without a surprise a second inquest in January 2013 confirmed that she died of
"accidental alcoholic poisoning".
Now recall one of her favorite songs
"Rehab"
The most famous line in this song goes: "The try to make me go to rehab but I say no no no.."
Well..you could say it is like she even wanted to die, isn't it?
Jimi Hendrix sang in "The Ballad of Jimi"
"Many things he would try, For he knew soon he'd die."
"Now Jimi's gone, he's not alone. His memory still lives on."
"Five years, this he said. He's not gone, he's just dead." "[..] choked on vomit"
5 years later he died by literally suffocation from choking to many of his own vomit..
I could go on for hours listing a few others but I think you got the idea..
Most of them were already giving up on themselves singing rather about their death instead of possible salvation. Maybe we should more often not only listen to the songs of these people but rather listen to what their soul is trying to tell to be able to perhaps help them to avoid their imagination getting reality..
XO, Dré.
